Flowers:

April to June

Agrostemma githago (Caryophyllaceae)

Corn Cockle

Erect hairy annual with opposite linear lanceolate leaves. Flowers solitary a rich bright purple, to 3 - 5cm across. Sepals longer than the petals.

Arable land, especially wheat fields where it is considered a weed as its seeds are poisonous. Unlisted by Meikle or Viney for Cyprus. Probably here a chance introduction. One other record of this plant is known from Amiantos.

Argaka 21.4.2006 - fringe of a barley field.
