Buglossoides arvensis (Boraginaceae)

Corn Gromwell

Erect, somewhat bristly annual to 30cm. Leaves oblong, often broadest above the middle. Flowers white (sometimes bluish to purple), 6-9 mm long in solitary terminal racemes. Tube not much longer than the calyx. Bristles of the supporting bracts to the inflorescence, white or pallid (not yellow!). Nutlets, brown, hard and warted. Cultivated and fallow land, waste ground.

[Note: Meikle (1985) recognizes two sub-species: Buglossoides arvensis (ssp. gasparrinii) and Buglossoides arvensis (ssp. sibthorpiana).
